Message:   Hello,

I am research associate with the Los Angeles Natural History Museum. Since I am unable to travel to all the remote locations of our beautiful planet, I am writing to both islanders and travelers of the Pacific Ocean.

My current research involves the study of micro-shells (shells <3mm), and specifically a family called Caecidae. I am seeking support from local residents and travelers throughout the Indo-Pacific region. The support is easy to provide and costs nothing more than a little time.

I am looking for individuals that would consider collecting sand and sediment from along the debris lines of beaches, from tide pools, or from along the base of reefs while diving. It is just as easy as looking for shells, and there is no cleaning involved. I pay the postage and give proper credit to the individuals who collect the material. I will even consider paying for the time spent collecting by local residents. And if someone is actually a shell collector, I can offer them some nice pectens from my personal collection.

Basically, I am looking for the top one to two inches of sand and sediment. I typically scoop that top layer and place it in a small cloth bag or quart size zip-lock bag . I will also take rocks in high silty areas and brush off the debris into the bag. Any area with a high debris zone is perfect, from tidepools to 100m down. Collected material should be allowed to dry out enough, so there is no water dripping from it. Then it should be placed in zip-lock bags and labeled with the location and depth.

If you think that you might be interested or know someone who might, please contact me for more details on mailing and labeling. I will be sending this post to several forums. Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Bret Raines
