Message:   Dear Professor van Binsbergen,

I am a student at the University of Edinburgh, studying in my final year for a Masters in History. (...) At present I have one question that has not yet been answered by the reading of your book 'Intercultural Encounters'. This is a question of legality. How far do you think an anthro-historical approach to question of land claims (on a national level) and genocide indictments (on an international level such as the ICTR) would be of benefit to the lawyers and the victims? I am researching the practicality of history and anthropology in development and the issue of international law is bothering me. I was wondering if you believed that the only way to reconcile past issues as the ones mentioned above would be through systematic anthropological and historical research to get to the truth of the matter, so justice could be done.

If you do have any time to ponder, or have already pondered this and have more insights to dazzle me with, I would be grateful to hear them.

Many Thanks,

Joanna Gill
